Shichimi is a Japanese spice blend made up of seven ingredients. Every shichimi is a little different but the you can generally expect punchy heat, a floral citrus flavor, and an herbal, savory crunch. This blend goes heavy on the yuzu zest for brighter fragrance and a cushion for the spiciness.

Store in freezer to preserve freshness. Do not eat desiccant in package.
As one of few sources of spiciness in Japanese cuisine, shichimi is used to garnish a wide variety of dishes from noodle soups, to eggs, to grilled or fried meat and fish. We like it sprinkled on buttered corn on the cob in the summer.

Yamatsu Tsujita is a spice company based just outside of Osaka that is famous for their shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven spice mix) and stone-ground sansho pepper. The company is helmed by 4th generation owner Hiroyuki Tsujita, a man passionate about his craft. Tsujita-san knows each supplier personally and even helps them during harvest time. As a master blender, he knows that each ingredient has its own best season.

Tsujita-san's dedication led him to the Takanotsume (Hawk’s Claw) chili pepper, a native of Japan that had been almost completely forgotten. Tsujita-san is now the only one who grows this pepper. He prizes it for its aroma and heat. As the main component of shichimi togarashi, Tsujita-san’s use of this chili really sets his product apart from the rest.
